Why learn English

Why learn English???

My name is Doris and I am an English teacher. My mother tongue is German. I lived in Canada, B.C., many years algo. Why learn English in my opinion? Undoubtedly, there are many reasons. English is the lingua franca, the language of communication, in many contexts, both in professional and private life. Talking from my own experience, I find it very rewarding to exchange ideas with people from all over the world when I am in Barcelona, or even here in Bellaterra, which is a multicultural place as well. A language is a bridge to another culture or, in the case of the English language, to several cultures, not only from the English speaking world, but beyond. English is, of course, the language of science is and is essential in the academic world. There are many important publications in English and you can gain many insights when dominating the language. Moreover, you can use many online resources and play video games. All in all, you will have better career opportunities. There are hardly any employment opportunities these days without knowing foreign languages. Apart from the use of the English language in a professional context, English is useful in almost all areas of our everyday life. It is fun to watch movies in the original version, to understand English songs and to read English literature. When you are further advanced you could even act in a play in English or start writing your own texts in English.

Feeling lost when travelling? This will not be the case after studying some English. Maybe, you even want to live abroad. Then, a language course will prepare you a bit for this important step in your life. Of course, you will also get some intercultural knowledge. What are the DOs and DON’Ts? Very often we take for granted what we learned as children. In another culture, our certainties are sometimes turned upside down. So, it is better to be prepared. That’s why I encourage everyone to enroll in a language course, not only for the reasons mentioned beforehand, but also because of the benefits of languages for your health: You increase your attention level, improve your memory and your problem-solving skills. You will think more creatively when learning languages and will learn many curious facts about life in general. And, last but not least, you will have more opportunities to make friends and to meet a partner: Every language you learn opens a door to the heart of people and everybody will appreciate the effort you make for sure. Join our language lessons: You are very welcome! Thanks.
